How switching insurance companies works

What to gather, when to switch, and how to avoid a gap in coverage.

Switching insurance companies is easier than most people expect, and with an independent agent you only have one conversation to make.

  1. Find your declarations pages. They list your coverage, limits, deductibles and renewal date. Your current company can email them, or we can work from what you know.
  2. We quote the same coverage with several companies. Matching coverage lets you compare prices fairly. We’ll also point out anything you’re missing.
  3. Pick a start date. Your renewal date is easiest, but you can switch any time.
  4. The new policy starts before the old one ends. Never cancel first. A gap in coverage can raise your future rates and leave you driving uninsured.
  5. We send proof of insurance to your lender. That includes your mortgage company and any auto lender.
  6. Cancel the old policy in writing. Any unused premium is usually refunded. Some companies charge a small fee to cancel mid-term; we’ll check yours first.

When switching might not make sense

If your current company is already the best fit for your coverage and price, we’ll tell you so. Sometimes a coverage change with your current company is the better move.
